Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
In a significant political development, the AIADMK has decided to sever its ties with the BJP and exit the NDA ahead of the 2024 general elections, marking a major shift in Tamil Nadu's political landscape. The decision was reached following a unanimous resolution passed at a meeting convened by the party's general secretary, Edappadi K Palaniswami.
The announcement led to jubilant celebrations at the AIADMK headquarters in Chennai. Talking to reporters after the meeting, AIADMK Deputy Coordinator K P Munusamy, said, "AIADMK unanimously passed a resolution in the meeting. AIADMK is breaking all ties with BJP and NDA alliance from today. The state leadership of the BJP has been continuously making unnecessary remarks about our former leaders, our general secretary EPS and our cadres for the past one year."
Releasing a statement on the decision taken, the AIADMK said it will lead a separate front for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
"We are breaking our alliance with BJP and NDA as TN BJP leadership is continuously, purposefully defaming AIADMK and its leaders Aringar Anna and J Jayalalithaa. We will form a new alliance and face upcoming Parliamentary elections," the statement said.
The decision was further fueled by recent controversial statements made by BJP Tamil Nadu president Annamalai, which were seen as challenges to AIADMK's cherished legacies and aggravated existing tensions within the coalition.
